The fabrication and machining services we provide are underpinned by decades of experience in the engineering industry and we offer a range of professional services to customer who either don’t have an internal engineering capability or require some additional capacity.

We work closely with customers to help deliver their objectives and can provide a tailored package of services at an affordable price point. Work can be done at client offices or remotely.

The services we offer are outlined below.

  • Sub-contract 3D CAD and 2D Drafting
  • Bespoke product design – end-to-end
  • Engineering Project Management – as a service
  • Reverse Engineering
  • Manufacturing process development
  • Design for Manufacture and Design For Assembly
  • Training

CAD Design & Drafting

When we work with customers on a design-and-make project we offer a free design and drafting service if the customer has parts made by us.

This service is also available on a sub-contract basis charged at affordable hourly or daily rates.

Degree qualified, we’ve been doing design work since 1988 originally working in the aerospace sector. Back then drafting work was done on drawing boards with pencils and ink. We were there when the first CAD systems were introduced and have never stopped being hands on.

Nowadays we use a 3D fully parametric CAD system. We can import and export a number of common CAD file formats both 3D (STEP and IGES) and 2D (dwg and dxf).

Product design – end-to-end

As well as contract design and drafting work we also undertake full life-cycle product design and development work.
We can provide end-to-end product development that usually starts with capturing the user / market / product requirements and translating these into a design specification / brief. From this specification product concepts and system designs can be created and a structured comparison of different design solutions against key design drivers performed.

Best design solutions move through to the detail design phase where 3D CAD models and 2D engineering drawings for parts and assemblies are created along with Bill’s-of-materials (BOM’s). Design reviews are held throughout the design phases to ensure work is progressing in line with customer expectations.

Once the design is complete we can either hand over the design package as it stands or we can assist in bringing the product to production. We can make prototype units and carry out design validation testing as well as go on to make full production items if needed.

Our engineering knowlede allows us to design machined parts, castings, injection moulded parts, sheet metal parts, fabricated and welded parts.

During the design process we can also offer various supporting services. These include Design and Process FMEA (Failure Modes & Effects Analysis) which is a technical risk analysis and management tool, optimisation of the design for Manufacture, Assembly and Test (DFM, DFA, DFT).

To help visualise the final product before anything is manufactured we can also use KeyShot to create high quality photo-realistic renderings. These are often used to help market the product or to allow our customers end-users to see what the product might look like before it is made.

Project Management as-a-service

In the same way as we offer CAD resources on a contract basis we can also provide professional Project Management as a service. We specialise in Managing New Product Development and other types of technical and engineering projects having over fifteen years’ experience in doing so. This was gained in blue-chip organisations both large and small.
If you have projects you need managing but don’t have internal resources or people with the right skill sets to do so effectively then we can help fill that gap. If you don’t need a full time resource or a contractor five days a week to bring some order and clarity to your projects then we can help with this too.

If you have ailing projects that are suffering scope creep, going over budget, are plagued by issues and are spiraling out of control we can come in and help fix things.

Typical project management activities we undertake include:

Project definition & initiation; creating project objectives, scope, schedule, resource plan, business case, risk register and holding a project kick off.

Managing project delivery; holding project reviews, updating schedules with progress, reporting status, managing project risks and issues, controlling project costs.

Managing project closure; controlled close of the project, holding post-implementation reviews, documenting Lessons Learned

Implementing project governance; design of Project Boards, holding governance meetings to appraise senior stakeholders of project status.

Project recovery; analysing ailing projects, identifying sources of problems and making recommendations for containment and recovery actions. Creating a new baseline for project scope, schedule and budget to completion. Re-designing governance if needed and supporting with delivery of re-planned project.

We can scale our services to fit your needs and can provide flexible tailored solutions to your  budget.

We are qualified and time served in the key project management methodologies and importantly we are able to adapt these to suit the scale of the business, the size of the team, the company culture and existing Project Management practices. We can also design and document Project Management and New Product Development processes should you require.

We are certified in Prince 2, MSP and Agile PM methdologies and also fully conversant with the PMI’s PMBOK (Project Management Body Of Knowledge).

“We have used  Ashland Engineering since around 2011 for a variety of design-and-make projects around the factory. Andrew worked closely with us on a number of projects to design and manufacture bespoke items used on our Production Line such as assembly fixtures, bench-extensions, special purpose frames, wheeling-dollies, etc. Parts were delivered in the agreed lead times and the quality of workmanship is good.”

Steve N, Production Manager; Traka Assa Abloy

“Andrew and his company were very helpful in listening to our needs (specs) and delivering the required parts as detailed and on time. Happy with the service provided and would recommend to others looking for a personal, tailored approach to customer service and bespoke parts.”

M Cain, River Island

“We approached Ashland Engineering to design and make a steel dining table base for a large piece of quartz we had purchased. Andrew was very helpful with choose the right materials and coming up with the exact design and style we wanted. He even helped us pick out the right shade of paint. The table was made to a high quality level in the agreed time-frame. The finished piece looks stunning, everyone comments on it. We are very happy with the service we received from Ashland Engineering – highly recommended.”
